Deacon Robert Warren Obituary

Deacon Robert Dale Warren was born on February 9, 1943, to the late Rev. Grannison Warren Sr. and the late Janie Evans Warren in Camden, South Carolina.

Robert was a 1962 graduate of Jackson High School in Camden, SC. While there, he excelled as both a student and an athlete. He proudly wore #23 and often joked about being the “first Michael Jordan” of basketball. Upon graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C. and work for the United States Printing Office.  He later enlisted in the United States Army where he served from 1963 to 1966 in the 82d Airborne Division with overseas duty in both the Dominican Republic and Vietnam.

After being honorably discharged, he returned home and received his Associates of Business Degree from Columbia Commercial College in Columbia, S.C. He was employed for 33 years for EI Dupont and upon retirement worked for the Camden Police Department as a crossing guard and the Camden Military Academy as a security guard.

To know Robert was to love and appreciate him. He was very caring, compassionate, honest and outspoken. His compassion for youth and love for sports inspired him to coach and referee youth basketball throughout many years of his life. He later became an avid sports critic and commentator while sitting in the stands during his grandchildren’s many sporting events, always being their biggest fan. Robert had a love for fashion, when he wasn’t sharply dressed in a suit or tie you would often see him sporting his Kansas City Chiefs paraphernalia.

Family was the pivotal essence of Robert’s life. He was proud and honored to be the patriarch, father, grandfather and great grandfather to his family. He has been a major presence in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a mentor and father/grandfather to many in his community.

Robert grew up in a Christian home with Christian morals and values. He was a was a faithful and loyal member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served in many different capacities. He served for many years as the Vice Chairman of the Deacon’s Ministry and Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. He was also a faithful member of the Mt. Moriah Mass Choir, Brotherhood Ministry and Brothers of Harmony. He served several terms as the President of the Brotherhood Auxiliary for the Mt. Moriah Baptist Association. Robert was also a former member of the Hadoth Lodge #250 and American Legion Post #203.

On October 24, 1969, Robert married the love of his life, the former Mary Miller. They shared an unconditional love for each other. As a care-giver for his wife during her illness he provided her comfort and support. In 2016 when his health began to decline the roles reversed and with the help of her daughters, son in-laws, grandchildren and other close relatives, she was able to unselfishly provide him with the care, love and support that he needed.

On Monday, March 11, 2019 at 2:30 in the afternoon, at Kershaw Health in Camden, SC, God dispatched his angels angles to give our beloved his eternal rest. God saw him becoming weary and saw fit to unite him with his beloved parents and siblings: James, William, Grannison, Helen, Henry and Elizabeth.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Miller-Warren; two daughters, Regina Warren-Crim (Jasper) and Rochelle Warren-Council (Charles); six grandchildren, Markeita Warren-Barber (Torri), Sterling Council, Robert Council, Ja’Lantra Crim, Ja’Varis Crim and Ja’Nai Crim; three great grand-daughters, Phalyn Crim, Ava and Kenzley Barber; one sister, Estelle Warren; one brother/nephew, Ralph Warren, Esq.
