Mrs. Jessie Mae Nelson Mathis entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, after an extended illness. She was born to the late Deacon Moise Nelson, Sr. and Dollie Murphy Nelson.
Jessie attended the public schools of Lee County. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Rev. Isaac Mathis, Sr. This union was blessed with seven children.
Jessie worked at Skyline,Town and Country and Oxford Manufacturing for several years. Jessie had a love for family, baking, canning and gardening. You would never leave her home without being offered something to eat and drink.
Jessie Mathis accepted Jesus Christ as her personal saviour. She joined Pine Grove AME Church at an early age. There she was a dedicated and faithful member. Mrs. Mathis served on various organizations; Pine Grove Missionary Society, Choirs, BHN Singers, formally the AME Singers, just to name a few. Jessie had a passion for singing. Jessie was the Manager of The I. M. Singers. Later, Jessie joined Union Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her health decline.
She was preceded in death by her grandson Donavon Mathis; sisters; Lolla Brisbon, Nell Haley, Julia Hunter; her brothers; Charles Nelson, Sr. James Nelson, Thomas Nelson, Earnest Nelson, Moise Nelson, Jr., Jerry Nelson and David Nelson.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories; her children; Christina (James) McAllister, Brenda Chavis of Columbia, SC, Willie James (Almetta) Mathis, Barbara (Grover) Wactor, Isaac (Margo) Mathis, Jr., Dorothy Mathis and Elijah (Diannie) Mathis all of Rembert, SC. one sister, Almeta (Samuel) Jenkins of Rembert, SC; sisters-in-law; Louise Nelson, Lolla Nelson, Hattie Mae Nelson, Liberty Mathis, Janie Nelson, Lenora Jenkins, Dorothy (Percell) Moore, twenty-one grandchildren, forty-four great-grandchildren, one godson, Anthony Nelson and a host of relatives and friends.
