Easter Mae Salmond was born on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1934, in Boykin, South Carolina, to the late Lillie (Peggy) Gridine and Carolina (Dobe) Hollmon. As a child, she assisted her parents in sharecropping, while receiving early education in Horatio. In 1955, the family moved to Camden, where she met Leon Salmond. The two were later married on March 7, 1957 and from this union, three children were born: Leon Jr., Isaac, and Easter Vanessa.

Easter worked for many years for local pediatrician, Dr. Charles Zemp, before being employed by Kershaw County School District. Throughout her profession, she worked at Camden Primary, Camden Elementary, Camden Middle and Lugoff Elementary Schools in the food service department prior to retiring in 2002. Throughout her life, not only did Easter raise her own children but she was also responsible for the care of some of her nieces and nephew. These include Marilyn (Carolyn Salmond), Pamela (Lisa) Hollmon, Roosevelt (Cat) Hollmon, and Maurisa Salmond. She also raised her two grandchildren, the late Robert C. Salmond, and his sister Nancy Salmond.
