Ms. Geneva Priscilla (Hollmon) Holman, of Richmond, Virginia, transitioned into eternal life on Friday, October 22, 2021. She was born to the late Carolina “Dobe” and Lillie “Peggy” Hollmon in Boykins, South Carolina.
Affectionately known as “Silla” down south and “Ma Ginny” in Virginia, Geneva was educated in Kershaw County Public School system and was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church in her youth. By way of Washington, DC, Brooklyn, New York and Ahoskie, North Carolina, Geneva made Suffolk, Virginia her home from 1976 until 2017. During this time, she worked at Gold Kist Peanut Factory for a short period of time, Smithfield Meat Packing companies for 8+ years, the Suffolk Fruit Store (better known as the “Fruit Stand”) for 12 years, Shuckers Bar & Grill for 15+ years, concluding her career after a couple years at Derlz Restaurant & Pub. She fellowshipped and worshiped at New Mt. Joy Food for Living Ministry until no longer physically able to attend. In early 2017, Geneva moved to Richmond, Virginia.
The name “Ma Ginny” was given to Geneva in the early 80’s by her special nephew, William “Dodie” Lawrence. “Ma Ginny” was a lover of family and friends, and a lifter of those that needed a hand-up. She was a great listener, always willing to give advice with love or just listen with an open heart. She shared anything she had with anyone who needed it and wore her “Ma Ginny” title very well.
Geneva enjoyed a variety of music, across the ages and was not ashamed to hit a mean two-step in her younger years. In her later years she became an avid television watcher, and remained a fan of the Washington Football team, yeah, OK, “The Redskins” as she would say.
Geneva was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Hollmon and Carolina Hollmon, Jr.; six sisters: Pearl Arthur, Nancy Belton, Elsie Johnson, Rosetta Hayes, Naomi Hollman and Easter Salmond.
She leaves to cherish her memories, four daughters: Pamela “Lisa” Hollmon of Camden, S.C., Veronica “Peggy” Hollmon of Washington, DC, Lenore Riddick (Michael) of Richmond, VA and Cheryse Lawrence of Richmond, VA; one adopted-in-love daughter: Melva Davis of Suffolk, VA; two grandchildren, Devin Hollmon and Kay Hollmon, both of Washington, DC; one beloved granddaughter: Shaqueena “Luckie” Holland of Suffolk, VA; one sister: Christine Gathers of Camden, S.C.; one brother-in-law: Leon Salmond of Camden, S.C.; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Hollmon of Washington, DC; one devoted niece/sister: Carolyn Salmond of Camden, S. C.; one devoted goddaughter: Salesha “Sugar” Warren of Suffolk, VA; a special great-nephew/son: Roosevelt “Cat” Hollmon of Irmo, S. C. and a host of other nieces, nephews, extended family and love ones whom she loved very much.
