Mrs. Betty Jean (Lewis) McClure, 81, peacefully gained her wings on April 24, 2026, at MUSC Downtown in Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Betty McClure was born in Camden, South Carolina, to the late Leroy and Jessie Lewis. She graduated from Jackson High School as a member of the Class of 1962.
Betty was a devoted wife to the late Herbert McClure for 61 years and a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, and friend. Throughout her life, she remained dedicated to serving and helping others. She worked at Skyline Manufacturing in Camden, South Carolina, for more than 20 years before the business closed. She enjoyed gardening, taking walks, and cooking, and she was known for her wonderful sense of humor. Betty had a special way of making everyone feel like family and loved unconditionally—there was nothing she wouldn’t do to help others.
Betty was a respected community leader in Pickett Thomas Acres. She was an active member of Mount Joshua Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend E. L. Sanders. During her time there, she served in many roles, including choir member, missionary board member, pastoral board member, and Sunday School teacher.
She leaves to cherish in her memory her sons, Tony (Linda) McClure and Stanley McClure; her grandchildren, Jasmine (Henson) King, Davion McClure, Stephanie McClure, Toni McClure, Zionna Bryd, Jada Byrd, Myshia Byrd and Destiny Byrd; along with a host of great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Magnolia Nelson, and her brother, Richard Lewis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert McClure; her sisters, Cynthia Pearson, Danetta Belton, and Verline Jones; and her brother, Walter Lewis.
The family expresses their sincere gratitude to MUSC Downtown in Columbia, South Carolina, for the excellent care provided during her time of illness. They also extend their kindest regards to the family and friends who showed love by keeping her company and faithfully checked in on her.
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go
