Mrs. Doretha Spann Sumpter, age 76, transitioned into the hands of her heavenly Father on October 30, 2020, in Sumter County, South Carolina. Doretha was born in Camden, South Carolina On February 22, 1944, to the late James Spann, Sr. and Jannie Thomas Spann.
Doretha graduated from Jackson High School. She worked at several local dry cleaning/laundry businesses, Pizza Hut and Shoney’s with dedication.
Doretha accepted and committed her life to Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church, Springhill Road, Camden, SC. She served faithfully and sung beautifully in the choir. She often inspired others by singing solo during special church events. She served as a faithful member of the Union Baptist Church, Rembert, South Carolina as a member of the Senior Missionary Ministry, the Trustee’s Wives Ministry and enjoyed the Senior Citizen Outings.
Doretha raised two sons, Hubert Pearson and Bryant Brown. She was also proud to be the godmother to Anastasia Spann and Andrew Dennis.
She was joined in Holy Matrimony to Johnnie Sumpter, Jr. and she showed her love and kindness to her extended family.
Doretha was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James Spann, Jr., George Spann, Sr., and Jesse Spann; a sister, Corine Spann Ransom and a brother-in-law, John Ransom, Jr.
Doretha is survived by her husband, Johnnie Sumpter, Jr., two sons, Hubert (Ubri) Pearson and Bryant Brown; five step-children, Ronald Sumpter of Columbia, SC, Eric Sumpter, Chris Sumpter, Gwen (Stanley) Davis and Angela Yvonne Sumpter all of Sumter, SC; one brother, Charlie (Stephanie) Spann of Ft. Worth, TX; three sisters, Dianne (Willie) James of Camden, SC, Mable A. Spann and Lillie M. Cooper both of Sumter, SC; three grandchildren, Kahvon Brown, Ziere Brown and Zaneah Brown; two sisters-in-law, Christine Spann of Rembert, SC and Joyce Brown of Baltimore, MD; her extended family, Brenda Pearson, Tyrone Pearson, Tamaka (Larry) Pearson Moten and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
