Johnnie Sumpter, Jr. was born October 16, 1938, to the late Johnnie Sumpter, Sr. and Maszrine Alston Sumpter in Lee County, SC. He departed this life on February 11, 2021 in Columbia, SC.
He was married to the late Doretha Spann Sumpter until her death in 2020.
He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. Johnnie’s work career began early and expanded many years with numerous companies including Flour Daniel Construction-Dupont plant, Lugoff, SC and Miller Lumber Company in Camden, SC where he remained until his retirement.
After retirement, Johnnie and his wife, Doretha would often be spotted riding around Camden or the countryside, without a schedule, simply enjoying life and each other. He loved to read about current events and build his picnic tables for many of his friends.
Johnnie was a lifelong member of Union Baptist Church Rembert, SC where he was a trustee for many years.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Lee Sumpter, Pearl Lee Dennis and Hattie Mae Mickens, and brothers Joseph Sumpter and Willie Sumpter.
He is survived by his children, Ronald Sumpter of Columbia, SC, Eric (Bessie) Sumpter, Gwen (Stanley) Davis, Christopher Sumpter of Sumter, SC and Angela Sumpter of Columbia, SC; reared in the home, Hubert (Ubri) Pearson and Bryant Brown; his brothers, Leroy Sumpter of Titusville, FL and Arthur (Faye) Sumpter of Camden, SC; sisters- in-law, Elease Sumpter of Sumter and Rosa Sumpter of Borden, SC, Dianne (Willie) James of Camden, SC, Mable Spann and Lillie M. Cooper both of Sumter, SC; one brother-in-law, Charlie (Stephanie)Spann of Fort Worth, TX; one aunt, Beulah Dixon; five grandchildren, Christopher II, Javon, Lillian, Kia and Felicity and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
