Mary L. (Grant) Murphy of Camden, S.C. entered into peaceful rest on Sunday, December 19, 2021. Born in Camden, SC, she was the daughter of the late Julius Grant Sr. and the late Rosa B. (White) Grant.
At an early age, Mrs. Murphy accepted Christ and attended Sweet Home Baptist Church on Old Stagecoach Road. She was educated in the Camden SC public schools. After graduating from Jackson High School, Camden, SC, she married James L. Murphy and they settled in Brooklyn, NY where they raised their family. To this union, four children were born. Mrs. Murphy was a retired cosmetologist with many loyal clients. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved to cook and was widely known for her delicious baked goods. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed puzzles, and loved a good game of bid whist.
After they retired in the late 1980s, Mary and James relocated back to Mary’s beloved hometown of Camden. Once back home, she rededicated her life to the Lord’s work as a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Black River Road in Camden, where she sang on the Senior Choir.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was family oriented and was affectionately known as “Murphy” and “Mimi” to her grandchildren. She was an engaging, loyal friend and was loved by all who knew her.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, James L. Murphy, a daughter, Mrs. Brenda (Murphy) Fields, her parents, and her four brothers: Alva Grant, Julius Grant Jr., Richard Grant, and Charles Grant. Left to forever cherish her memories are a daughter, Beverly C. Murphy, Esq. (James Ken-Kwofie); a daughter, Sheba Murphy Jennings; a son, Dr. Saied T. Murphy (Wendy); eight grandchildren: Khair Gamble, Tahir Gamble (JoRae), Jihad Fields, Raushanna Fields, Kareem Wilkerson, Barry Jennings Jr. (Dominique), Khadijah Kenkwofie, and Tariq Murphy; ten great-grandchildren: Kali Wilkerson, Braylyn Fields, Kloey Wilkerson, Amani Jennings, Bryn Fields, Gloria Gamble, Ayanna Jennings, Kingston Porter, Quincy Gamble, and Gabriella Jennings; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and special friends.
