Obituary

Mattie Mae Gant was born in Boykin, South Carolina on March 6, 1943. She was the oldest daughter of seven children born to the late Mack Edwards Sr. and Maebell Edwards. She was affectionately called Mommy, Mama, Grandma, Mrs. Mattie and Sister Gant. Her innate skill set enabled her to conquer all barriers and obtain her diploma and further her education in healthcare.

On August 20, 2022, she was called home to rest. Mattie was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness and served as Pioneer. She found the most fulfillment and content sharing Bible teachings to everyone. Memories of her positive attitude and strong faith in the Bible, is what sustains her family through this difficult time.

While living in New York she met the love of her life. On June 30, 1972, she married her soul mate Eddie Lee Gant in Rembert, South Carolina. They raised eight children in Queens, New York. Their love for children enabled them to foster the community. All the children in the neighborhood loved and respected Mrs. Mattie and Mr. Eddie.

Those who knew her appreciated the genuine concern, generosity and respect she had for others. She was a kind, selfless and giving person who sacrificed a lot. Mattie was a rare diamond who had a heart of gold and was always willing to help anyone. She was truly a beautiful person inside and out. Her caring heart and caring hands will be missed.
