Nathaniel Norwood, Sr. Obituary

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” – Psalm 34:18

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Nathaniel “Nay” Norwood, Sr., who departed this life on May 10, 2026, at the age of 83.

Nathaniel was born on December 4, 1942, in Pageland, South Carolina, to the late Reverend John Ruben Norwood and Benzena McCurry Norwood. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy T. Norwood.

Nathaniel was educated in the public schools of Kershaw County and graduated from Jackson High School in 1962. He went on to work as a dedicated diesel mechanic with Ryder Truck Services for over 25 years. After retirement, he continued working with Tucker Trucking & Sons for six years.

Nathaniel loved laughing, traveling, music, and family. He had a giving heart and was always willing to help others. He was known for fixing anything, an unlicensed carpenter who always found a way to make things work.

After the passing of his beloved wife, “Dot,” he carried her memory with him always. We find comfort knowing they are reunited again—planting flowers and enjoying their favorite shows together.

He later joined Camden First United Methodist Church, where he renewed his relationship with the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his memories of his children: Annick (Kenneth) Murphy, Annette Tucker, Nathaniel Norwood Jr., and Steven (Ezetter) Norwood.

Grandchildren: Shameka (Brandon) Worrell, Kenyatta (Thomas) Davis, Chantel Fleming, Sanchez Tucker, Clayton Norwood, Samara Norwood, Steven Leren Norwood, Mason Norwood, and Noah Norwood.

Great-grandchildren: Titiana Halley, Kennidi Fleming, Xavier Greene, Thomas Davis Jr., Ayden Franklin, Preston Tucker, McKinley Fleming, Remi Tucker, Aislyn Jordon Worrell, Bella Star McLeod, and Travis Tucker.

He is survived by one sister, Mildred Owens, four sisters-in-law, Bernice Norwood, Ida Norwood, Ms. Alma Washington, and Margaret Washington. Three brothers-in-law, Mr. Jerry (Tanya) Washington, Mr. Curtis Washington, and Mr. James Washington, all of Columbia, SC He was preceded in death by his siblings, John R. Norwood, Charles Norwood, James D. Norwood, Juanita Rory, Geneva Norwood, Gertrude Lloyd, and Lonzena Brown, and two grandchildren, Travis McLeod Tucker and Nicholas Murphy.

He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Nathaniel’s legacy of love, strength, and kindness will live on forever.

The family will be receiving friends at 605 Cooper Street, Camden, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12 PM to 7 PM daily.
