Mother Reba Mae Cook Brisbon was born on January 29, 1919 in Lee County, SC to Mattie Cook and Tillman Sessions. She lived for 101 years, 9 months, and 21 days. She departed this life on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Kershaw Health Regional Medical Center.
When Mother Reba’s biological mother died at an early age, a young Reba went to live with her Aunt Jannie Wells and her family. Mother Reba was educated in the local schools around Pisgah and St. Matthews. At an early age, young Reba joined Union Baptist Church. She later married Mackie Brisbon, Sr. in 1937, and transferred her membership to Springhill United Methodist Church.
In 1958, Mother Reba moved to New York and began working at Memorial Hospital in New York City. She later worked at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in the Food Service Department, where she retired after 25 years. Then she moved back to SC in 1989 and reaffirmed her faith at Springhill UMC. Mother Reba became a faithful member of the United Methodist Women and one of the songbirds of the elite Senior Choir. Mother Reba loved to sing! She loved to sing ‘Old Zion Songs. When visiting Mother Reba, she had the sweetest voice and was sure to sing you a song before leaving. Mother Reba was the Mother of, not only the church but also of the Springhill Community.
In her spare time, Mother Reba enjoyed her daily 1 cup of coffee, getting her hair done, and out dressing the younger ones. She was always dressed up and ready to go! Ready to speak her mind. Mother Reba loved her family, she loved her church, but most of all she was a God-fearing woman who loved the Lord.
She is preceded in death by her husband Mackie, Sr.; two children: Mattie and Reba; and four grandchildren: Todd, Furman, Jr., Tyrone and Darryl.
Mother Reba is survived by her Children: Mackey Brisbon, Jr, Minnie Blanche Riley, and Furman Brisbon; one (1) brother- Samuel Sessions; ten (10) grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many many great-great grands; and great-great-great- grands; a host of Nieces, Nephews; other family and friends.
